Ashleigh Ball is a Bronze medallist with the women’s Great Britain hockey team from the London 2012 Olympic Games. We caught up with her in Argentina where she was preparing for the World League Finals with England.
Travelling abroad can be particularly challenging for a vegetarian athletes. Ashleigh shared with us her top 5 favourite vegetarian snacks she just can’t travel without.
1. Love Da Sweet Honey and Sea Salt Popcorn
A sweet treat for a heavy training day or the day after a match when refuelling is key. Popcorn is high in carbohydrates and contains some antioxidants and fibre.
2. Whole Earth crunchy peanut butter
Nuts provide a source of protein, which is important for a vegetarian athlete. This variety contains no added sugar and is perfect for spreading on oatcakes or rice cakes.
3. Kallo Belgium dark chocolate rice cake thins
Made with organic wholegrain brown rice, these rice cakes are a perfect alternative to sugary cereal bars or biscuits, particularly if you are looking to manage your body weight.
4. Rolled oats
Containing significant amounts of beta-glucan, rolled oats tend to help regulate blood sugar and are an excellent source of dietary fibre, iron, and thiamine.
5. Mixed nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are vital to the health of our brains, immune and cardiovascular systems. Nut sand seeds are also rich in protein, fibre and important trace minerals.
